Starting a new job: A short playlist to get myself pumped up

Tonight I’m starting my new full-time job.

Here I am, today. Ready to start my first shift at my new job. I hope it'll be a good job, and I hope I make myself a valued and dependable employee.
Here I am, today. Ready to start my first shift at my new job. I hope it’ll be a good job, and I hope I make myself a valued and dependable employee.

I’m excited (and nervous) to start something completely new, something very different from anything I’ve done before. I hope I do well (wish me luck).

To get motivated for this first night, this first shift, I’m listening to some energy tunes. There’s no real thread to the choices, these songs aren’t tied to employment or new adventures or anything. It’s just good “keep the energy high” material. I figured I’d share this with you good people.

Let’s dive in.

My Chemical Romance – “Na Na Na”

It’s just so … punky and bratty. I love this band, and their “The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys” album has so many excellent tracks. When I hear this song, it gets my fist in the air and gets me rocking out.

Killjoys, make some noise!

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – “Runnin’ Down a Dream”

“Goin’ wherever it leads” suits my mood as I follow this new path. I love Tom Petty (with and without The Heartbreakers), and this song always is good for bringing the energy up. An odd video, yes, but I love the sound.

“There’s something good waitin’ down this road / I’m pickin’ up whatever’s mine.”

Weezer – “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To”

This song just feels like sunshine and an upbeat attitude. It’s a fun video, too.

I love the quirky lyrics, I love the arrangement, I love how easily this tune becomes a singalong. It seems that every time people write off Weezer, the band comes back with at least one killer song (and usually many more) to shut down the naysayers. Their last release, a self-titled effort that’s referred to as their “White Album,” is an incredible record.

Identical Suns – “E.M.I.L.Y.”

I love the Identical Suns. I love the lyrics, I love the sound, I love how I feel like I’m decade hopping from song to song, or sometimes even within one song. And I mean this in a good way!

I feel like I’m hopping around from 1966 to 1984 to 1996 (well, something like that) with this song, getting all this fantastic “sunshine pop” “bubblegum pop” rifftastic goodness that always gets my toes a-tappin’.

The group’s debut album is track after track of tastiness, and I know the band is working on its sophomore effort. I can’t wait to hear that sucker in all its glory!

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band – “Ain’t Good Enough for You”

This is one of my favorite Springsteen songs. My two fave Bruce albums (usually … sometimes another will leap up into a top spot) are “The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”

This song was recorded during the “Darkness” era, but wasn’t originally released then. It was busted out of the vaults for the “The Promise,” which revisited that era and unearthed so many gems.

I love the jauntiness of this track. You can’t tell me this wouldn’t have been a huge hit if it had been released as a single in 1978. The studio version is great, but I love watching Bruce have so much fun with it in this live performance.

You’ve got to have fun, and you have to do what feels right for you at the time. I’m riding that motivation into work tonight.

Chat with you again next time!
